UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Visit to Japan

  1. United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will visit Japan for four days from Tuesday 16 May to Friday 19 May 2006. This is a working visit upon invitation by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Secretary-General’s visit to Japan will be his first since Feburary 2004 and his seventh visit to Japan. The visit is a part of his official trip to Austria, Republic of Korea, Japan, China, Vietnam and Thailand.
  2. The purpose of his visit is to exchange views on the issues that the international community faces now, such as the reform of the UN.
  3. During his stay in Japan, the Secretary-Genreal is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Foreign Minister Taro Aso and Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe. He will also exchange views with the Japanese business leaers whose companies have participated in the UN Global Compact.
  4. The Secretary-General will attend Honorary Degree Conferment Ceremony of the University of Tokyo and make commemorative lecture.
